Veterans Park Membership Meeting
The Veterans Memorial Park and Education Center Society will be holding their annual membership meeting on January 31, 2010 at 1:00 PM in the Matamoras Borough Hall.
The membership will be electing officers and trustees for this year. Also plans for the Park will be discussed. Kevin Stroyan will make a presentation of our planned building to be constructed on site. There will be conversation about the remaining monuments that still need to be erected; they include: The French and Indian War, The Civil War, WWI, The Indian Wars, War of 1812, The Mexican War, The Spanish-American War, and the Gulf Wars.
This past year Vets Park had an Armed Forces Day Parade. This day is always commemorated on the 3rd Saturday in May. The parade was successful and is expected to be an annual event. This year the parade will take place May 15th. The Society hopes that any veteran’s organization that can make the parade will attend and be part of this day. Any veteran that wants to march that does not belong to an organization can join the march with the Vets Park “military brigade.” Veterans who are unable to march can ride in vehicles, or ride on one of the “veteran wagons.” There will also be floats representing local organizations in the Tri-state area. Organizations wishing to take part can contact the Society. Any veteran’s organization, or veteran, that wants to take part in this parade, can contact the Vets Park Society or come to the meeting. There will be a ceremony at Vets Park following the parade. Refreshments will be served after the ceremony. The public is encouraged to attend.
This past year the Society erected and dedicated “The Cold War Monument.” There was also a visit from Pennsylvania’s Sen. Arlen Spector, a Korea War era veteran, who addressed the Cold War period with a group of veterans and public at Vets Park.
It is the hope of the Vets Park Society that members, other veterans, and the public at large will try to attend this meeting. Support from veteran’s organizations, as well as other members of the community, is necessary for completion of the Veterans Memorial Park & Education Center. If you have questions, call 570-491-4003.
Sincerely,
Dick Gassmann
Vets Park President
